Organization
of Africa Unity Investment Forum
Cairo,
Egypt, 22 - 24 April, 2002

Egypt's Minister of Foreign Trade, Youssef Boutros-Ghali, Ghana's
Deputy Minister of Trade, Akwesi Osei-Adjei and Assistant Secretary
General of the Organization for African Unity/African Union (OAU/AU),
Laurence Agubuzu were among participants at the OAU's first Investment
Forum, held in Cairo, Egypt, in conjunction with the 8th All-Africa
Trade Fair (22-30 April 2002). In addition to the 50 Industrial
Investment and Technology Project Profiles (IITPPs) from seven African
countries promoted at the Forum, UNIDO and Investment Technology
Promotion Office (ITPO) Bahrain held a workshop on Industrial Promotion,
presenting UNIDO?s services and methodologies. In his closing speech,
OAU Assistant Secretary- General Agubuzu expressed an interest in
the Investment Forum becoming a permanent feature of the Trade Fair.
A
UNIDO a booth was set-up at the Trade Fair to combine meetings on
the IITPPs with ad-hoc presentations on the Organization?s activities
and services such as UNIDO Exchange to Trade Fair participants.
The response to the IITPPs was higher than usual for such events.
Especially encouraging was the experience of ITPO Delegate Peter
Ankrah, from Ghana Investment Promotion Center (GIPC), who attended
the event within the framework of the UNIDO Integrated Programme
for Ghana and presented Ghana?s investment climate and opportunities
to a large audience. Delegate Ankrah made several promising contacts.
In particular, an Egyptian company has shown great interest to pursue
discussions on the possibility to develop a project (manufacturing
and commercialisation of cutlery) worth US$5 million.
The
Forum provided an opportunity to further develop already established
or new contacts with various institutions that expressed their serious
interest for closer cooperation with UNIDO such as: JETRO (Cairo);
Communauté des États Sahelo ? Sahariens; the Industrialization Fund
for Developing Countries (IFU) ? Danish International Investment
Funds; the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA);
the Cairo-based export-import financier, AFREXIM BANK; African Telecommunications
(ATU); and ACDI ? VOCA, a private, nonprofit organization that promotes
broad-based economic growth and the development of civil society
in emerging democracies and developing countries
